From the sidelines – New Year, new sports

As we begin the new year, we will see a new age of several sports. The Virginia High School has approved lacrosse for both boys and girls in varsity sports at Christiansburg and Blacksburg high schools.

The spring sport is still in the preliminary stages but last year’s club sports at both schools proved there is interest, and both of those club teams were very competitive in several tournaments. But here is where the dilemma lies. Lacrosse is one of those unknown sports here in our area.

The New River Valley Lacrosse Club has done a good job to create interest for all ages, but we need adults to step forward and help the high schools to take this next step.

Blacksburg has found coaches for their new program, but Christiansburg is still looking for adults to lead its programs.

In order to keep lacrosse moving forward, CHS must find coaches in the next few weeks or the varsity team could be put on ice. So, if anyone has some lacrosse knowledge, then they need to step forward.

Contact Athletic Director Tim Cromer at Christiansburg High School if there is interest.

The College National Championship will be played this coming week, and I believe the committee got it right. Georgia and Alabama will settle it all on the field. My prediction: Georgia 33, Alabama 30.

The National Football League playoffs also get underway this weekend, and I predict it will be Minnesota versus Pittsburgh in the Super Bowl.

I also expect local high school basketball will be dominated by Radford High School. The Bobcats are again playing at a high level. They should again be in the mix for another state title. Also, watch for an up and coming Christiansburg girls team to make a lot of noise before this season is over.

The Auburn boys will also show new Mt. Empire District opponents they can put the ball into the bucket.

As the new year begins, there will also be several individual performances that I’m sure will take us by surprise. There always are and there always will be those moments that we will be talking about at the end of the year.

That’s a part of this job I always enjoy. You never know what sports will bring you. Just remember we’re talking about teenagers and sometimes they can reach to the highest ring of sports and give us some thing to say “wow” about.

Let’s just set back and enjoy.
