Well, football season is here and I don’t see anything wrong with that. After all, what is the fall without football; it has everythingcool evenings, lots of excitement, bands, cheerleaders, mascots and school unity. What better way to start the school year? High school, college, pros, almost everyone has a team they pull for each week.
Virginia Tech has even more with the Hokie Bird and a new head coach, James Franklin. If Franklin is as good a coach as he is as promoter and salesman, the university is in for a treat on the field and in the business office.
The opening game of the season for the Hokies was against Virginia Military. It was a sell out along with several other games during the season. We are talking 65,000 seats. That’s a lot of hotdogs, drinks and turkey legs.
Following a team can take your mind off other things going on in your life. Both good and bad, not everyone can win each week. Some teams go many weeks before they see the win column. I know, I have been in that position more than once and it hurts. But the point is you’re in the game and that is what life is all about.
It is so important to support high school games. You might know some of the players, cheerleaders and band members. Having the opportunity to support kids in your neighborhood is an opportunity to say something good about what is going on in your school district.
The revenue generated by football is a major factor in keeping other school sports programs alive and paid for.
The local football games this week (Sept. 11) are: AHS home vs. Ft. Chiswell, BHS home vs. Floyd, CHS at William Byrd, EMHS at Hardwood and RHS -open. All games at 7 p.m. Don’t forget to get a hotdog.
