Dr. Ruth Shannon Newton Fisher, a beloved mother, grandmother, educator, nurse, and friend, passed away after a life filled with purpose, learning, adventure, and love. Born in Virginia, Ruth remained devoted to her home state throughout her life, embracing its people and communities with warmth and generosity.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, Ellen Newton and Rufus Newton; her husband, William Rufus Fisher; and her dear friend, James Thomas Dunn, whose companionship brought joy and meaning to her life.

She is lovingly survived by her daughter, Margaret Frances Fisher, and son-in-law, Hazem Sayed Hussein Badr; and by her cherished granddaughters, Hannah Hazem Badr and Lily Hazem Badr, who brought immense pride and happiness to her life.

Ruth dedicated herself to a lifetime of caring for others. She began her professional career as an emergency room nurse, providing comfort and skilled care to those in need. Her passion for helping others later led her to education, where she taught high school English for thirty years. She inspired generations of students with her love of literature, her high standards, and her unwavering belief in the potential of every young person.

A lifelong learner, Ruth earned a master’s degree from Radford University and later completed her doctorate at Virginia Tech. Affectionately known to family and friends as “Dr. Ruth,” she took great pride in her academic achievements and in the knowledge she shared with others.

Ruth possessed an adventurous spirit and traveled extensively throughout the United States and around the world. She embraced new cultures, treasured experiences with family and friends, and approached life with curiosity and gratitude. Her wit, intelligence, and kindness touched countless lives.

In her later years, Ruth was blessed by the devoted friendship and care of Kaye Price and Susan Conrad. Their constant companionship, kindness, and support brought comfort and joy to her days. The family is deeply grateful for the friendship and assistance they provided.

Dr. Ruth Shannon Newton Fisher lived fully and well. She leaves behind a legacy of compassion, education, resilience, and love. Her memory will continue to inspire all who knew her, and she will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

“To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die.” – Thomas Campbell
