Ephrat “Bounce” Asherie returns to the Moss Arts Center’s “HomeStage” lineup Thursday, April 29, at 7:30 p.m. following her successful behind-the-scenes fall workshop with performers from Ephrat Asherie Dance (EAD).
For this event, the center presents a performance of the company’s celebrated work, “Odeon,” streamed from the Joyce Theater in New York City. The performance will be followed by a live discussion with Asherie and her brother, jazz pianist and “Odeon” co-creator Ehud Asherie.
“Odeon” brings together and remixes street and club dances set to live music by Brazilian composer Ernesto Nazareth, known for mixing early 20th century romantic music with samba and other popular Afro-Brazilian rhythms. The work delves into what happens when you bring together various styles of dance, remix them, pick them apart, and challenge them to inhabit unfamiliar spatial and choreographic contexts.
Ticket holders have access to this “HomeStage” series event as it happens and for seven days following the event.
A New York City-based B-girl, dancer, choreographer, and a Bessie Award winner, Ephrat Asherie has shown off her formidable street dance chops as a favorite member of Dorrance Dance. Ehud Asherie, called “a master of swing and stride” by the New Yorker, is a jazz pianist who integrates the venerable New York piano tradition into his inventive style.
A 2016 Bessie Award winner for Innovative Achievement in Dance, Ephrat most recently received a National Dance Project award to support the development and touring of “Odeon.”
Jazz pianist Ehud integrates the venerable New York piano tradition into his inventive style. Ehud has toured clubs and festivals around the world and his playing can be heard on countless recordings, including the 2010 Grammy Award winning soundtrack of HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire.” He recently released his 12th album, entitled “Shuffle Along,” a solo piano performance of Eubie Blake songs from the musical “Shuffle Along.”
Tickets for the event are $10 for the general public and are free for Virginia Tech students.
