Coming down the track: the Radford New River train-viewing platform

In 27 degrees and a wet breeze, this week, several men from the Radford City Public Grounds division cut down a small tree, hacked out its stump  and hauled it all away.

Gene Dixson, Mike Pennington, Ethan Walker, Devid Nester, Wes LaVelle and Calvin Riggs of the City of Radford Public Grounds division were preparing the way this week for the train-viewing platform that will be built beside the Cultural Heritage Park just below Glencoe mansion (600 Unruh Drive).

The train-viewing platform that will be built beside the Cultural Heritage Park just below Glencoe mansion (600 Unruh Drive) is a partnership among the city of Radford, Glencoe Mansion, and Virginia Tech architecture students.

The observation platform is designed to stand along the railroad right-of-way giving a view of the bridge and the west end of Bisset Park. A trains cross the bridge 12 to 15 times a day, and train enthusiasts, who already appreciate Radford’s train heritage, are expected to be drawn to this close access.

The wooden signage stand is already up.
