Bouldering has surged in popularity across Virginia, and this past week, the Blacksburg Department of Parks and Recreation unveiled its newest addition to Municipal Park on Patrick Henry Drive.
Dean Crane is the director of the Parks and Recreation Department. He said the Boulder Park was designed to create a place for all ages to challenge themselves and be physical. “The man-made boulders came from E/P Climbing in Oregon and Eldorado Climbing in Colorado. They were shipped across the US on flatbed trucks and set into place with a house crane. The largest boulder weighs 27 tons. These boulders are a wonderful and unique amenity to the Municipal Park,” he said during last week’s unveiling.
The new area features two climbing boulders sourced from EP Climbing in Oregon, alongside two shotcrete structures from El Dorado Climbing in Colorado. Each is 10 feet tall.
According to information from the town, the boulders were sculpted to facilitate climbing both with and without handholds, offering a fun experience for beginners and experienced climbers alike.
The project cost the town approximately $300,000.
