CHRISTIANSBURG — Workers at the I-81 Roanoke St. Starbucks store have voted to join Starbucks Workers United – joining more than 410 stores and 10,000 workers who have unionized with Starbucks Workers United in the past three years.
“I’m really proud of my fellow partners for coming together to secure yet another amazing win for SBWU, and I look forward to a future that facilitates a similar and even stronger unity, not just for Starbucks but for workers all across America,” said Gwynn McCord, a shift supervisor at the Christiansburg Starbucks.
The location joins a nationwide movement of 10,000 baristas “joining together to win justice at work, including protections on core issues like respect, living wages, racial and gender equity, and fair scheduling,” according to a statement released by Starbucks Workers United. “The historic organizing campaign hinges on peer-to-peer organizing led by workers, for workers – and has won election after election in stores nationwide. In February, unionized Starbucks workers reached an agreement with the company to begin discussions to reach a foundational framework for collective bargaining agreements for represented stores and partners.”
Since 2021, 419 Starbucks stores in 43 states and the District of Columbia have successfully unionized — more than any other company in the 21st century.
