Cell phone policy to change at RCPS

RADFORD – Beginning Tuesday, Jan. 7, when Radford City Public School students return from winter break, the use of personal electronic devices will be prohibited during the bell-to-bell school day for all students.

“Bell-to-bell” means from the start of the school day until the dismissal bell rings at the end of the school academic day. This includes lunch and time between classes.

While cell phones are allowed on school grounds, the expectation is that they are “off and away”.  Cell phones and personal electronic devices should remain in bookbags or lockers during the bell-to-bell day.

The new policy was approved by the Radford City School board during its Dec. 12, 2024.

The new division policy is reflective of Governor Youngkin’s Executive Order 33.  The only change from the current practice is that cell phones will now be “off and away” at all times including lunch.

If a parent or guardian needs to contact their child, they may email them or call the main office and office staff will help facilitate that communication. If a child needs to use a cell phone for a family emergency or other important issue, they should ask their teacher to come to the main office to receive permission from the principal to use their cell phone in the main office.

Thank you for your support as we strive to maintain a positive and productive learning environment that is free from the distractions of cell phones and social media.
