The 80-plus foot Norway Spruce outside Radford Public Library was decorated with more than 1,000 brightly colored bulbs after being lit by Santa with a countdown from the crowd led by Radford Mayor David Horton.

RADFORD – A big crowd turned out Tuesday for the annual Radford Christmas tree lighting ceremony, hosted by the Radford Public Library.

The event, emceed by Radford Mayor David Horton,  included musical performances by the Grove United Methodist Handbell Choirs and the Radford University Chorus. Children got to try their hands at several handbell carols, led by Grove United Methodist Handbell Choir director Libby Watts. Homemade chocolate chip cookies and hot cocoa were provided by the Radford Coffee Co., and Santa made a special visit from the North Pole to light the tree at 6:30 p.m. The 80-plus foot Norway Spruce outside the library was planted in the 1940’s and is considered Radford’s official Christmas tree.

Radford’s “Jingle All the Way” holiday parade, which was scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 8, has been rescheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 13 at 7 p.m. due to rain.
