Carol “Ellen” Rucker Canode, 75, of Shawsville, passed away on June 7, 2020.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Betty Rucker; a sister, Linda Johnson; and a grandson, William Nathan Canode. She leaves behind to cherish her memory her husband of 47 years, George Canode; her son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Kristi Canode and their children Taylor and Luke, all of Shawsville, as well as a brother, Jamie Rucker, and his wife, Christie; a sister-in-law, Rebecca Hutton, and several nieces and nephews.

Ellen was known to her grandchildren as “Babe,” a title she loved. She was a Sunday school teacher, played piano at church, and was a Disciple of Christ youth advisor. She spent years in these roles and touched many lives in the youth of Virginia. She was an adopted mother and grandmother to many. She loved working with the youth. She loved children and they loved her.  She will be missed by man. She was an inspiration and a role model. She fought a good fight until the end. Just as Coach Jim Valvano said, “Don’t give up, don’t ever give up.”

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to her favorite church camp, Nature Camp for underprivileged youth. Mail to Christian Church in Virginia, Attn: Nature Camp, 1290 Enterprise Dr., Lynchburg, VA 24502.

There will be a celebration of her life in Craig County, Va., at a later date.

The Canode family is in the care of Mullins Funeral Home and Crematory in Radford.
