Ted was born Dec. 21, 1931 to Robert Henry Burton and Ethel Lee Fuqua in Vinton, Va. After Ted graduated with a Bachelors of Science from Roanoke College in 1953, he went on to earn his Doctor of Medicine from the Medical College of Virginia in 1957.
Ted served in the Army Medical Corp after completing medical school. He then worked as a Board Certified OB-GYN in New Bern, NC and Radford, VA and brought 5000 new lives into this world.
Ted was happily married to Phyllis Ann Crenshaw Burton for 62 years, living in Radford, VA for 22 years before returning to their home in New Bern, NC following his retirement in 1996.
Ted was a faithful member of Centenary United Methodist Church where he served as Chair of the Administration Board and Staff Parish. Ted was also an active member of the Salvation Army Advisory Board and the Rotary Club.
Ted is survived by his four children: Chris (Kristine) Burton, Kevin Burton, Linda (Stephen) Mungall, and Ann (Steve) Lambert; his 10 grandchildren: Brian (Whitney) Burton, Kristin Burton, Michael (Rheanna) Burton, Kelly (Michael) Distler, Megan (Admas) Belay Mungall, Brooke (Andrew) Chambers, Hunter (Sarah) Lambert, Samantha (Jordan) Barnette, Lauren (Nicholas) Stone, and Hope Mungall; his seven great-grandchildren: Layla, Maggie, Sadie, Beau, Natalie, Emersen and Madeleine; and his cherished dog, Gigi. Ted is predeceased by his loving wife of 62 years, Phyllis Burton; sister, Dawne Maxey; and Kevin’s wife, Sarah Burton.
A private graveside service in memory of Ted will be held at a later date in Richmond, Va.
