The 4th annual YMCA at Virginia Tech Try Y’s Pi contest was a huge success selling more tickets than ever and offering an amazingly delicious five pie sampler from four local restaurants and the Y Meals On Main Cooks.

The participating bakeries were Our Daily Bread, Blacksburg Bagels, Next Door Bake Shop, Bull & Bones, Christiansburg and Seth and Connor- the Y Mobile Kitchen Crew.

The pies were consumed and the votes were cast and we are pleased to announce the winning pie was created by Kayla from Bull and Bones, Christiansburg – a delightful Coconut and Strawberry Curd Pie. Congratulations Kayla!

“Kayla joined Bull & Bones in July of last year and has been a fantastic addition to our team,” said Bull and Bones manager Robbie Hockett. “Not only is she an excellent server and bartender, but it turns out she’s a wonderful baker as well. She has a side business called Riddle’s Cakes where she makes cakes for weddings, birthdays other special occasions, as well as many delicious holiday themed treats.”

Kayla says she got the inspiration for her pie from one of her favorite bar drinks.

“The flavor combination came from being a bartender there at BnB,” she said. “One of my favorite drinks I make is a coconut cocktail with strawberry syrup. Coconut Cream Pie has always been a childhood favorite and I played around with multiple recipes before I settled on one that I loved. The eight pies for the contest took about six hours to make. I made the crust first and let it chill over night before I baked it. The coconut cream and strawberry curd are both cooked over the stove and once everything is cooled I put the pies together.”

The Coconut & Strawberry Curd Pie from Bull & Bones joins the past winning pies Apple Crumb Pie from Bollo’s in 2021, a Kenafa Pistachio Cream Pie from Halwa in 2022, and a Mango Coconut Key Lime Pie from Next Door Bake Shop in 2023 in the Y Pi “Hall of Fame.”

Congratulations Kayla and Bull & Bones and thank you to all who purchased tickets and participated in this fundraising event for the YMCA at Virginia Tech Food Insecurity Programs.
