BLACKSBURG – Rotary Club of Blacksburg is holding a book fair to support the Virginia Tech Prison Book Project at Blacksburg Books, 401 S. Main St., Blacksburg; 4 – 7 p.m.

Enjoy a wine and cheese selection as you browse books. Blacksburg Books will have a pre-selected section of approved books for purchase for the Prison Project.

The purpose of the event is to increase public awareness of the VT Prison Book Project, which is associated with the Appalachian Prison Book Project, and to increase the book inventory for the program.

The program provides requested paperback books to incarcerated individuals in Virginia and nearby Appalachian states. Books provide a positive use of time and often increase literacy skills for those incarcerated. Frequently incarcerated individuals request books to build skills, such as plumbing or wiring, that may lead to employment following their release.

Those attending the event at Blacksburg Books will be able to purchase a book to donate to the VT Prison Book Program. Appropriate books will be on hand for purchase, or they may be ordered from a list available that evening.

Appalachian Prison Book Project sends free books to people imprisoned in six Appalachian states (West Virginia, Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, and Maryland), hosts book clubs inside prisons in the region, and is leading an effort to bring for-credit college courses into prison.
