BLACKSBURG – Blacksburg Town Council released a joint statement Monday regarding the charges again Town Council Member Liam Watson, who was indicted July 24, 2024 on felony charges related to election fraud.

Watson was indicted by a Montgomery County grand jury. The Virginia State Police began an investigation in March 2024 after an allegation was made regarding election fraud. The investigation was assisted by the United States Postal Inspection Service. Watson was arrested on three counts of felony election fraud and one felony count of illegally voting.

The town council statement says the council will not take any action at the present time and will allow the judicial process to unfold before determining a course of action.

“Recently the Blacksburg Town Council was made aware, through local news reports, of the arrest of Council Member Liam Watson,” the statement reads. “At this time the town council has no additional information regarding the allegations beyond what is contained in the indictment. We trust that our legal system, which is based on a presumption of innocence, will address this matter in a timely and just manner.  The town council will take appropriate actions, as necessary, as the process unfolds and more facts become available.”

“The town council is a non-partisan elected body committed to upholding the principles of transparency and integrity,” the statement continues. “We understand the concerns this situation may raise within our community and assure the community that the town council remains dedicated to serving the best interests of Blacksburg and its residents.
