Andy Washburn will now serve as the Blacksburg Museum and Cultural Foundation’s director of history bringing communications nous and an excitement to conduct historic research.
With nearly 20 years of experience in non-profits, including 15 at James Madison’s Montpelier in Orange, Virginia, Washburn will oversee the development of new exhibits and programs that focus on Blacksburg’s history and culture.
Coming from the post of communications coordinator for the foundation, Washburn said he values collaborative work sourcing insight from staff, members of the community, historians and other experts.
In addition, he’ll manage the museum’s collections and volunteer program, and assist with other projects as needed.
As someone who is relatively new to the area, Washburn said he is excited about the opportunity to delve deeper into local history, especially for the opportunity in this position to conduct historic research.
“For me, the most interesting aspect of studying history is the opportunity to create your own story by studying primary sources rather than completely relying on someone else’s interpretation,” he said.
Restating the foundation’s dedication to building on the work of scholars and writers, Washburn intends to encourage the reexamination and contextualization of established history.
“Sometimes a fresh look at original sources can give additional insights that others may have overlooked or misinterpreted,” he said in an email. “As one of my mentors at Virginia Tech, Peter Wallenstein, often says “Just because someone wrote it down doesn’t mean it’s true.
“I’m also looking forward to helping our organization develop educational programs for the public.
“I’ve spent a good part of my career putting together lectures, tours, and professional development programs for teachers and other audiences. Helping to educate others has been one of the most rewarding parts of my career.”
He graduated with a degree in history from Virginia Tech in 1997, and returned to Blacksburg with his family four years ago.
