The staff at Roses Department Store are shown on opening day in 1955. This building on West Main Street in Christiansburg replaced an earlier structure that was destroyed by fire. Notice the sign over the door advertising the modern way of shopping: “No Waiting the Self Service Way.” (This photo is from the D. D. Lester Collection. This image and many more are available from the Montgomery Museum & Lewis Miller Regional Art Center.)
This photograph taken near Riner in the early twentieth century illustrates the transitional period on Montgomery County farms where horses and tractors were both in use. The hollow core tile silo is an early version of this iconic agricultural structure. They were replaced by metal and concrete block silos during the mid-twentieth century. (This photo is from the D. D. Lester Collection. This image and many more are available from the Montgomery Museum & Lewis Miller Regional Art Center.)
