RADFORD Va — The weather didn’t look promising on Wednesday evening, but that didn’t stop more than 100 locals coming out to check out West End Wednesdays, which was held at Glencoe Museum (600 Unruh Dr.) in Radford.
The family- and pet-friendly, free event was full of music, food, drinks and a variety of craft, libation and community information tents that were set up by local organizations.
Appropriately, the green tent, flanked by a hand-painted compost bin and a recycling station, was set up by the Three Sisters Community Project, where Katie McFall and Ash Syphrett were telling the attendees about a new garden and about the practice of composting.
The Three Sisters Community Project wants to create a trail of outdoor community learning spaces centered around gardening.
The first project being worked on is the Levy Learning Community Garden (in the courtyard next door to Brick House Pizza at 311 Main Street). The organization RadRoots partnered with Tapestry Massage and Yoga along with Wildwood Apothecary in order to launch this project.
They want to bring the community together through common interests such as art, music, herbalism and caring about the planet.
“The main goal is to cultivate an eco-conscious community of individuals to come together through gardening,” said McFall.
As part of their tent display at West End Wednesday, there were multiple bins designated for recycling or composting.
“The composting will be processed offsite by a local farm and then brought to the garden,” said McFall.
The Three Sisters Community Project wants to show people how to grow food in regenerative ways. As of now the project plans to stick to Radford and increase access to healthy food.
The Levy Learning Community Garden invites everyone to join them for their first planting party, from 1:30–4 p.m., Thursday, July 18 for community, learning and a little work.
