Young people at the Pulaski Community Youth Center last week began planting their summer garden with tomatoes, squash and okra. Plants were donated by Lowe’s. In the central courtyard of the old Riverlawn School, the Pulaski Community Youth Center hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new Community and School Garden this week. Built during WWII for the children of Radford Army Ammunitions Plant workers, the vast classical brick school building with its tall windows and high ceilings was abandoned for years until the county re-envisioned the space.  Now, the Pulaski Community Youth Center is holding summer camp complete with archery, gardening, hikes and swimming.  Problem-solving, teamwork and leadership skills are built along with health, confidence and friendship says center Director Richard Loveland. Standing at the entrance to what will be a 110-acre park, once the Smith Farm that reaches the banks of the New River, the center is making plans to use the land that surrounds it and the river in summer camp outdoor activities in years to come.
