Akers, James Kyle

James Kyle Akers, 96, of Radford, passed away Friday, Nov. 24, 2017. Born on Nov. 12, 1921, he was a member of Morgan’s Chapel Church in New River and worked with Robertson-Fowler Construction Company building roads. He was a combat-wounded veteran of WWII, serving in the 4th Marine Division.


He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Walker Akers; four brothers and five sisters.

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Gary Akers of Carthage, Ill.; granddaughter and her husband, Sarah and Ian O’Neal of Bowan, Ill.; great grandchildren, Kyle O’Neal and Kaitlyn O’Neal; sisters, Mary Buckner of Snowville and Reva Martin of Christiansburg.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. today, Nov. 29, 2017, at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford. Funeral services will begin at 1 p.m. with Rev. Ginny Thompson officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow in the Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the VFW Post # 776, 913 Second St., Radford, VA 24141 or to Morgan’s Chapel UMC, P.O. Box 118, New River, VA 24129.
