Hope Wilson drove in five runs on two hits to lead Auburn High School past 12-0 on Thursday to advance the team into the semis of the regional softball tourney. Wilson doubled in the first inning, scoring three runs, and hit a home run to left field scoring two.
With her home run, she now takes the school’s homerun mark and leads the state in the category. McKenzie Booth struck out 10 batters on the day. The hurler also gave up one hit and zero runs over five innings while walking two.
Auburn jumped out to the lead in the bottom of the first inning after Kaylee Ramrattan singled, scoring one run, Ariel Mullins singled, scoring one run, Wilson homered to left field, scoring two runs, while Faith Wilson was struck by a pitch, driving in a run.
Auburn collected 10 hits in the game. Mullins and Wilson were a force together in the lineup, as they each collected two hits while hitting back-to-back. As a team, Auburn amassed nine walks for the game. Johnnie Gaynor and Leah Wimmer led the team with two walks each. Gaynor stole two bases.
Auburn Baseball Shuts Out PM
Auburn defeated Parry McCluer 14-0 in the first round of Region C play this past week.
Brody Hensel led the offense with three hits and two RBI that included a double and a triple, with Jared Lavergne adding two hits and two runs scored.
With the two hits, Lavergne moves into second place All-Time on the VHSL hit list and the two runs scored put him in a tie for third All-Time in the VHSL in runs scored.
Talan Mower also had two RBI in the game. Matthew Altizer pitched four innings allowing one hit, four walks and striking out nine with Cody Flinchum pitching an inning allowing one hit and picking up two strikeouts to complete the shutout.
Auburn was slated to host a region semi-final game on Monday with a return trip to the state tournament on the line.
Auburn Soccer Teams Advance
Both the boys and girls soccer teams also advanced in Region C quarterfinal wins this past week. The girls’ shutout Galax 10-0 to move to 13-5 on the season.
In the girls game, Alyson Funk and Jillian Tucker finished with three goals each.
On the boys’ side of the field, Auburn moved to 13-3-3 on the season with a 5-0 shutout of Giles. Jared Bradley and Alex Zuckerwar, both scored twice while Ethan Sutphin punched in one kick.
