The regional classification for several area high schools is set to expand.
The Virginia High School League is proposing that Blacksburg in Class 4 will be a part of a region that includes two new schools, Culpeper and Western Albemarle, which will push Region D to 11 schools.
Region D Class 4 will now include: Salem, Louisa, Liberty, Orange County, Charlottesville, Eastern View, Halifax, Jefferson Forest, Blacksburg and the two new member schools.
Meanwhile in Class 3, Christiansburg will see new regional members in George Washington and Mecklenburg County, pushing the number of schools to 14 members.
So, Class 3 Region D will now include: Abingdon, Bassett, Carroll County, Cave Spring, Hidden Valley, Lord Botetourt, Magna Vista, Northside, Pulaski and Staunton River along with Christiansburg and the two new members.
In a crazy twist, Region C Class 2, which Radford and Floyd are members, will now gain Liberty Christian Academy and Grayson County. The region jumps to 15 with Appomattox, Chatham, Dan River, Glenvar, Gretna, James River, Liberty, Bedford, Martinsville, Nelson County and Patrick County.
There is no proposed change in Class 1 Region C, which includes membership from Eastern Montgomery, George Wythe, Giles and Auburn. Region C will remain at 12 members.
The changes would go into effect next year and run through the 2030-2031 school year.
