BLACKSBURG – Today, Wednesday, Oct. 9, the YMCA at Virginia Tech will celebrate the opening of its new Welcoming Center by hosting a ribbon cutting event followed by a gallery reception featuring Latin American Art and Culture as part of the Hispanic Heritage Month.
The Welcoming Center will help meet the growing needs of the international newcomer and immigrant populations that seek to call the New River Valley home. Funded by a generous grant from Lowe’s Hometowns, this newly constructed Welcoming Center elevates the YMCA at Virginia Tech as the 19th Y in the nation to offer such a resource, joining other YMCAs around the country to help immigrants successfully integrate into American society. It will provide support in five programmatic areas: language and education, economic integration, health and wellbeing, community navigating, citizenship and civic engagement. In addition to the programs and services offered in these five areas, it will also provide information and referrals, while making social connections to help newcomers build their support system.
For 150 years, the YMCA at Virginia Tech has served the campus and community by adapting to meet the region’s changing needs. As a leading non-profit organization, the Y remains an active community partner in environmental stewardship, food insecurity programs, and numerous social well-being initiatives.
