RADFORD – U.S. Department of Justice Office on Violence Against Women has awarded $450,000 for grant programs to the Women’s Resource Center of the New River Valley in Radford.
Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) announced the grant on Friday.
“Domestic violence and sexual assault are extremely damaging to the victims of these crimes,”said Griffith. “The money that the Department of Justice allocated to The Women’s Resource Center of the New River Valley will be used to reduce domestic and sexual violence by strengthening services to victims and holding offenders accountable. I applaud the Department of Justice for funding these programs to ensure women’s safety.”
October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. According to the U.S.Office on Violence Against Women (OVW),the Office “and organizations across the country will bring greater awareness to domestic violence and its effect on women and children. Domestic violence is multifaceted and includes physical, psychological, sexual, and economic abuse of a victim and is often hidden from public view.”
The Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) administers 19 grant programs “authorized by the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) of 1994 and subsequent legislation.”
“These grant programs are designed to develop the nation’s capacity to reduce domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking by strengthening services to victims and holding offenders accountable,” according to a statment from the office.
