William “Hootie” Houghton Wright, 73, passed away Monday, Aug. 8, 2022.
William was known by several nicknames, the first being Snider, named by family members. When playing football at Radford High School, his football coach could not pronounce his middle name and ended up with the nickname of Hootie.
While working for the Corp of Engineers for 30 years, he was Bill.
Hootie was born and raised in Radford. He graduated in 1967 from Radford High School where he played fullback. In 1977 he graduated from Radford College with a bachelor’s degree in geology. He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Radford and was an active member of the Club Mac.
He was preceded in death by his father, Bill Wright.
Survivors include his wife, Sandy Wright; his mother, Bette Wright; a brother, Dr. G. Todd (Colleen) Wright; a sister, Rebecca (Jerry) Markert; and many other relatives and friends.
The family received friends on Thursday, Aug. 11, at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford. Funeral services were held on Friday, Aug. 12, at 11 a.m. at Grace Episcopal Church with Deacon William Yagel. Interment was private.
