We must once again learn to disagree without being disagreeable

We are two weeks removed from the unspeakable act of violence that claimed the life of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University. This was a tragic loss of life that stemmed solely from a person sharing his political opinions, and most tragic of all is the fact that he leaves behind a young family that no longer has their husband and father. Also disturbing is the large number of individuals who believe that his death was somehow warranted, which shows how far our public discourse has fallen as it relates to tolerance of differing opinions and the devaluation of human life.

Much has been said by those on both sides of the ideological spectrum regarding the motive, the assassin’s political persuasion, and other details that might give any indication as to why this assassination happened. Undoubtedly, more details will emerge that may help piece together that puzzle. But regardless of motive, it should be abundantly clear that violence against someone who simply shares different opinions than you is reprehensible.

As a country, we seem to have strayed from the ability to disagree with one another without being disagreeable. The proliferation of social media may play a part in this, but regardless of “why,” we must return to a point where ideas and opinions can be shared without disproportionate hateful backlash. We can still have differences of opinion on policy, the direction of our country, and other important topics without wishing violence on those we disagree with.

In the Virginia General Assembly, Republicans and Democrats often disagree vocally and stridently on various issues. But more often than not, we refrain from personally insulting each other, and in fact, we work across the aisle on legislation where we can find common ground.  Political disagreement does not mean that someone on the “other side” is a bad person, and healthy debate is a hallmark of what makes our country so great. The problem is that the national debate on many issues has become increasingly less healthy, and unless people begin to look inward at how they react to the words of others, there will be more trouble ahead.

The good news is that each of us has the power and capability to share our opinions – even ones that we are extraordinarily passionate about – without resorting to hatred of “the other side.” It is up to all of us to reframe how we interact with others, either in-person, online, or in any other forum. We must once again learn to disagree without being disagreeable.

As the Delegate representing the 42nd House District in the Virginia General Assembly, your concerns are my greatest priority. If ever I may be of assistance to you and your family, please do not hesitate to reach out to me at DelJBallard@House.Virginia.Gov.
