Did dust from the Sahara Desert dust cloud earlier this week help this rainbow appear so vivid? Radford News Journal reader and RU Art Professor Dr. Steve Arbury said he isn’t sure, but the dust “was scheduled to hit SW Virginia [Sunday]. It was cloudy and late in the evening, around 8:30 p.m., the heavy cloud cover dissipated and this rainbow appeared. I’ve never seen a rainbow that so distinctly showed all the different color bands, and I’ve never seen one appear so late in the day. I’m wondering if the rust-colored clouds are part of the dust cloud, or are they simply that color because of the setting sun, which had already set at ground level by that point?”
