Step into the new year with an outdoor adventure
RICHMOND – Put your best foot forward and start off the new year with an outdoor adventure at any of the Virginia State Park locations.
First Day Hikes, a nationwide initiative led by America’s State Park system, have become a tradition for many people to get some exercise, explore outdoors and connect with nature all while enjoying the park’s unique beauty this season.
Parking is free at all Virginia State Park locations on Jan. 1, 2025, and visitors to each park will receive a celebratory First Day Hike sticker while supplies last.
Whether you prefer to partake in a solo adventure or want to join in on the fun of ranger-led hikes and activities, the parks have you covered with numerous ways to help elevate your experience during your visit.
Claytor Lake State Park will host a Vernal Pool Hike, 6620 Ben H. Bolen Dr. in Dublin. Meet in the parking lot between Campgrounds B and C. The hike will take place 1- 2 p.m.
“Ever wondered where salamanders live? Have you heard of fairy shrimp? Join our rangers for a short hike to our vernal pools and learn what they are and what critters reside there. This program is conducted in accordance with Virginia law; park staff possess the proper permits and training to collect and briefly handle wildlife,” the event details read.
