VDOT crews still working on secondary roads

SALEM — Snow plow drivers have made progress plowing and treating roads today throughout the Virginia Department of Transportation’s Salem District.

As of 10 p.m., all interstates (I-77, I-81, and I-581) and all primary roads (those numbered 1-599) for the 12-county region are clear or in minor condition. Drivers should watch for isolated slick spots overnight as lower temperatures may create icy conditions.

Snow plow operators are still working on secondary roads (those numbered 600 and above) and in many areas these roads are still snow covered. Crews will continue working overnight to plow secondary roads and neighborhood streets.

However, if additional snow or winter weather begins overnight, crews and contractors will return their attention to the primary roads (those numbered 1-599) and the interstates. These routes are VDOT’s top priority during any winter weather event.

Tonight, drivers are cautioned to be alert to refreezing as roads that have been plowed that may become icy as temperatures drop.  Snow plow operators in some areas will be monitoring conditions tonight on bridges, overpasses and other cooler areas.

The Salem District includes the counties of Bedford, Botetourt, Carroll, Craig, Floyd, Franklin, Giles, Henry, Montgomery, Patrick, Pulaski and Roanoke.
