The Radford University Softball Stadium will have a new look coming soon, as the Radford athletics department announced to the team earlier this week that improvements including an artificial turf field and new videoboard are coming to the stadium.
“Our program is extremely excited and grateful for Dr. Pat and Nancy Artis’ financial commitment to completely overhauling the Radford Softball Stadium,” head coach Kevin Fagan said of the project. “Turning our field into an artificial turf field and the addition of a video scoreboard will make our complex one of the premier playing venues in our region. The Artis family are such kind, humble people and their continued support of Radford University is nothing short of amazing!”
The project, funded by alumna Nancy E. Artis ’73 and her husband is scheduled to break ground as soon as possible. The new turf surface replaces the natural grass surface that has been in place since the stadium’s opening. The planned state-of-the-art video board and scoreboard will replace the current scoreboard in left field creating a unique fan experience.
“Yesterday marked a milestone for Highlander Softball and Radford Athletics, as Pat and Nancy Artis announced their generous commitment to fund a new turf field and videoboard for the Radford Softball Stadium,” commented athletic director Robert Lineburg. “Their ongoing support continues to leave an indelible mark on Radford University. These upgrades are pivotal to enhancing recruitment and retention, improving practice and competition, and elevating the fans’ experience. We are thrilled for the softball program to receive these transformative enhancements.”
The new field and scoreboard are just the latest in a long list of improvements that have come to Radford’s softball facilities in the last decade funded through donor support. The Highlanders completed up-to-date dugouts, chairback stadium seating and a press box prior to the 2014 season. In 2016, just behind the stadium’s left field fence, construction was completed on the Sioros Center which added an indoor hitting and practice facility for the Radford softball and baseball programs.
Radford Softball Stadium has played host to four Big South Tournaments and four nationally televised contests on the ESPN networks since its construction. It has also hosted multiple Jenny Finch Softball Camps, a three-day event that features hundreds of campers working at Radford’s softball facilities. The upcoming 2025 spring season will mark the 33rd year of competition at Radford Softball Stadium for the Highlanders, and first under direction of new head coach Kevin Fagan.
“We are honored to support Radford University athletics, the program with the highest student GPA in the Big South Conference”, Nancy and Pat Artis.
