Juneteenth Celebration
Juneteenth is a traditional African-American commemoration of freedom from slavery. Montgomery County-Radford City-Floyd County branch of the NAACP will celebrate Juneteenth 11 a.m.- 4 p.m., at the Rosa Peters Playground, 300 Depot St. NE in Christiansburg. Music by Dynamic Sounds. Food available to purchase: Fish Fry by NRV Progressive Men’s Club, and the NAACP Youth Council will sell hot dogs, drinks and other snacks. Proceeds to be used for local youth activities and scholarships. Activities will include swimming, children’s games, cake walk, raffles and an informative program on Juneteenth. Various talents will be shared by community members. NAACP and other community organizations will have booths and provide valuable information. Entry is free. Come one, come all!
Summer Solstice Festival
From 1 – 11:30 p.m. the Summer Solstice Fest will take over Main Street and Lee Street with a fantastic line up of family fun and entertainment for all in downtown Blacksburg.

Knitting Class
Radford Senior Center will offer free Basic Knitting Classes every Monday noon -2 p.m. with Instructor Connie Woodruff. In this knitting class, you will learn the basics of hand knitting. Bike Safety at the Farmers Market
Christiansburg Police Department, NRV Bike Kitchen and the New River Health District hosting annual Bike Rodeo, complete with a bike course, 3:30 – 6:30 p.m.
Kids can learn bike safety tips, interact with Christiansburg Police officers and have a chance to receive a free helmet, backpack or water bottle. Please bring your children’s bikes and helmets and make sure they wear closed toe shoes for this fun event! Moon bounce on Hickok Street and face painting by Katy Shepard. Town of Christiansburg’s Public Works Department will have a children’s activity regarding recycling, with the opportunity to win prizes. The Community Health Center of the New River Valley is offering chalk art; Wonder Universe: A Children’s Museum will be on-site with activities; and Montgomery Museum of Art & History is providing a pop-up exhibit. Wine tastings will be available with Iron Heart Winery. Christiansburg Farmers’ Market is open from 3-7 p.m. every Thursday through October.
Join the Town of Blacksburg and the Friends of the Huckleberry to celebrate the opening of the Huckleberry Trail extension. Ribbon cutting on the boardwalk at 3:30 p.m., followed by celebratory beverages at Rising Silo. Attendees are asked to park in the Glade Road parking lot at Heritage Park or at Rising Silo, where there will be a shuttle to the trailhead on Linwood Lane. The shuttle will depart at 3 p.m., and again at 3:15 p.m. Carpooling is recommended. Please allow time for a 15-minute walk from the trailhead to the new boardwalk. Alternative transportation will be available for those requiring assistance. In the event of rain, festivities will take place indoors at Rising Silo. The Montgomery County-Radford City-Floyd County branch of the NAACP will hold its June General Body meeting at 3:30 -5 p.m., at the Old Hill School Community Center, 570 High St. in Christiansburg. All are welcome. As is the group’s custom, there will be no general body meeting in July.

Dog Competition at the Farmers Market
Christiansburg Farmers’ Market is bringing back everyone’s favorite fur-iendly competition. Bring Fido to the market for Dog Days of Summer contest: best smile, best trick, best costume, senior dog, biggest dog, smallest dog and look-alike (with owner). Registration at the Market Manager’s tent on Hickok Street from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. The show – and judging – begins at 5:45 p.m. Enter your pet into any – or all! – of the categories. First-place winners in each category will go home with some fun treats. Also at the market on June 27: live music by Steve Smith, wine tastings by Whitebarrel Winery, a moon bounce and all of your favorite market vendors. In addition to the dog festivities, Braley and Thompson will be on site with “Dirt Ice Crème” and the New River Health District will have fresh produce and nutrition advice. Christiansburg Farmers’ Market is open from 3-7 p.m. every Thursday through October.
Rock Painting at the Senior Center
Join Radford Senior Center at 10 a.m. for rock painting. Go out on your own adventure and bring at least five of your favorite rocks to class. Free Summer Lunches
The library is proud to be hosting free lunches through the City of Radford again this summer! Please sign up if you are able so that we can have a good estimate of how many lunches we will need. Walk-ins are also welcome while supplies last. Lunch is free to ages 0-18, but is $3 for adults (exact change, cash only). Monday – Thursday, June 10 – July 11, 12 – 12:30 p.m.
Entries needed for Blacksburg’s July 4th Parade
The Mount Tabor Ruritan Club is sponsoring the 33rd annual Blacksburg 4th of July Parade. Community Health Center of the New River Valley helps adults access VA health coverage
Beginning Jan. 1, 2019, new health coverage for adults will cover more people. If you work in retail, construction, childcare, landscaping, food service or many of the jobs that don’t offer health insurance, you may be able to get low-cost health insurance that includes regular preventive care and treatment for chronic health conditions.
