Blacksburg Library, 6 -7 p.m. This meeting will include instruction as well as practice time. All are welcome. Cindy Cowden has been practicing mindfulness meditation, or insight meditation, since 1990. She enjoys sharing this practice with people who are curious about how mindfulness might support their lives.

Christiansburg Library summer concert series
Christiansburg Library lawn, 7-8:30 p.m. – Root2 Music. Root2 Music is the musical intersection of Deep South country blues and Celtic/Appalachian fiddle music. Free Skin Cancer Screening
May is Melanoma Awareness Month, and River Ridge Dermatology will be hosting a free skin cancer screening at the Christiansburg Recreation Center on Friday, May 17, from 1:30-4 p.m. Regular skin checks play a vital role in early detection and treatment. Don’t miss Dr. Chad Johnston and Dr. Aleksandra Brown at this walk-in event. All ages are welcome, but children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. The last patient must be checked in no later than 3:50 p.m.

Noon – 1 p.m. at the Christiansburg Public Library. Sign up at the front desk for a 15 minute slot to read to a cat from the Montgomery County Animal Care and Adoption Center to practice reading and socialize shelter cats. All ages.
Indoor Yard Sale
The Women of St. Jude will be having an indoor yard sale/bake sale at St. Jude Catholic Church on Saturday, May 18th from 8 a.m.- 2 p.m. We will have clothes, small household items, toys, books, and much more! We will also be have baked goods along with sausage biscuits for breakfast and hot dogs for lunch. St. Jude Catholic Church is located at 1740 Tyler Rd., Christiansburg, VA 24073.
Oreo Tasting
There will be an Oreo Taste Challenge at the Jessie Peterman Memorial Library at 1 p.m. How many flavors can you guess? Vote for your favorite and results will be posted on our social media.

Movie and Panel Discussion
The Lyric Theatre will present The Public, a new movie starring Alec Baldwin and Emilio Estevez about homelessness in our communities and the role of the public library, on Sunday, May 19. The movie will show at 3 and 7 p.m. At 5:15 p.m. there will be a panel discussion on the topic of homelessness and other social needs, and the role of the public library sponsored by the Montgomery-Floyd Regional Library.

Senior Care Fair
Free event will have health screenings, local organizations and businesses centered on senior citizens’ needs, door prizes and more. The annual Senior Care Fair is co-sponsored by the Christiansburg/Montgomery Triad S.A.L.T. Council. 9 a.m. to noon at the Christiansburg Recreation Center.
Marble Paper Workshop
There will be a Marble Paper Workshop at the Jessie Peterman Memorial Library on Tuesday, May 21 from 4:00-5:00 p.m. Make marble paper bookmarks and photo mats out of shaving foam and paint in this fun STEAM activity. All materials provided.

Sign up for a summer of fun competing in the Southwest Virginia Swim League (SVSL) on the Christiansburg Aquatic Center Blue Fins Swim Team. All ages are welcome, including adults! First practice will begin May 22.

Help save the Pilot Community Center
Pilot School was built in 1921 and served the academic needs of the local community until the 1960s when it became the Pilot Community Center. The building needs some repairs, and we are asking local residents to help determine the future of this historic Appalachian structure and how it will continue to best serve the community. Please make your opinion known at a meeting on Thursday, May 23 at 6 p.m. at the Pilot Community Center. The address is 4449 Brush Creek Rd., Pilot, VA 24138.

Beginning Jan. 1, 2019, new health coverage for adults will cover more people. If you work in retail, construction, childcare, landscaping, food service or many of the jobs that don’t offer health insurance, you may be able to get low-cost health insurance that includes regular preventive care and treatment for chronic health conditions. A number of volunteer opportunities are available at the Montgomery Museum.
Docent: training is provided for individuals to staff the front office, answer calls, make sales, and interpret the history of the museum; events planning: planning and implementation of our major events annually, including Heritage Day, Mountains of Music, h’Arts on Main, Cruisin’ Christiansburg; Working with any of the committees: (Membership, Marketing, Events/Fundraising, Building Expansion, Building and Grounds); research with genealogy projects: working with the genealogy team; gardening: working in the garden with Virginia Master Gardeners.
