Author Event: Cece Bell
The Blacksburg Public Library welcomes Newberry Honor Winner, Cece Bell at 2 p.m. This event is free and open to all ages. Cece Bell is an author and illustrator of books for children. She grew up in Salem, Virginia and now lives and works in Montgomery County. Her graphic novel memoir, El Deafo, which chronicles her childhood experiences with hearing loss, received a Newbery Honor and an Eisner Award in 2015. Cece’s other books include the Geisel Honor-winning Rabbit & Robot series, I Yam a Donkey, You Loves Ewe, and Chick and Brain: Smell My Foot! She enjoys hanging out and discussing book ideas with her husband and frequent collaborator, author Tom Angleberger. Books will be available for purchase and signing at the event.
Deer Proofing Your Garden
Christiansburg Public Library; 2 p.m. A Master Gardner will at the library to explain how to deer proof your garden.
Family Fun Festival
A “Family Fun Festival” will be held at New River Community College, Dublin campus; 1 – 4 p.m. Festival will include a variety of activities for adults and children. Children’s activities include face painting, balloon art, a bouncy house, a mechanical bull and games. Animal and insect exhibits for hands-on learning experiences for kids of all ages. Health screenings and wellness information will also be available to attendees. Sponsored by NRCC’s Faculty Assembly and the NRCC Educational Foundation, the event is free and open to the public and held in 117 Edwards Hall.

Agency on Aging Annual Caregiver Conference
New River Valley Agency on Aging 11th Annual conference dedicated to the family caregiver; 8 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. at New River Community College. Registration is free for the family caregiver and lunch is provided. Limited scholarships are being made available to provide in-home care while the caregiver attends the conference.

Intellectual Disabilities Agency of the NRV fundraiser
Jersey Mike’s supports Intellectual Disabilities Agency of the NRV. Please go to Jersey Mike’s! 100 percent of the proceeds will be given to IDA, or place an order for your department/office. The IDA is “so grateful to Jersey Mike’s for having such a tremendous community spirit. We thank them for their support AND great food.” IDA is a locally funded United Way agency that provides programs for individuals with intellectual disabilities who live in the New River Valley.
Saturday, Mar. 28:
Spring Children’s Consignment Sale – Blacksburg United Methodist Church (BUMC) will hold its semi-annual consignment sale of children’s items at the Christian Life Center, 706 Harding Avenue in Blacksburg, on Saturday, Mar. 28, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Families will be able to get great deals on gently used kids’ clothes and shoes, toys, books, games, movies, baby gear and accessories, sports equipment, maternity clothing and more. Many items are like-new (some even brand-new). Some items will be half-price between 12:30 and 1:30 p.m. but you will want to shop early for the best selection! Proceeds will benefit local charities.

Fine Free February at the Radford Public Library
Bring a non-perishable food or clothing donation for the New River Community Action food bank (socks appreciated), or just stop in and make sure your contact information is up to date on your library account and RPL will remove your fines! Start February with a fine-free slate and enjoy the library again! Truly, no donation is required (but if you want to bring a donation, we’ll get it to NRCA for you!) Give us a chance to woo you back to us! Your overdue fines will be wiped clean! (not applicable to lost or damaged item fees or collections fees).

Passports at the Library
The Radford Public Library is a passport acceptance facility. If you are planning a trip overseas, it is best to get your passport sooner rather than later. Passports can easily take 6-8 weeks to process. We’re here to help! Check travel.state.gov for specific questions and general information. 2020 Master Gardener Training class
The New River Valley Master Gardener Program is seeking applicants for the 2020 Master Gardener Training class. It will be a hybrid format with on-site training on Tuesday evenings from 5:30-8:30, three Thursday evening classes, three Saturday afternoon classes as well as five on-line training sessions. The class runs from late February through early May. Topics covered include basic botany, plant propagation, herbaceous plants, house plants, vegetables, fruits, pruning, landscape design, floral design, lawn care, woody plants, entomology, plant pathology, abiotic stresses, soils, and pesticide use and safety. The cost for the course is $180 and participants do 50 hours of volunteer service. Contact Wendy Silverman at the Montgomery County Extension Office at 540-382-5790 for more information.

Christiansburg Helping Hands is a group of crafters coming together every Wednesday from 1-3 p.m. at the Christiansburg Rec Center. We make items for various needs in our community.
