Book sale at the Radford Public Library on Friday, May 3, and Saturday, May 4 from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Also the sale will continue on Sunday, May 5 from 1 – 5 p.m. Many fiction books are available as well as lots of other categories, such as history, cooking, inspiration and others. Battle of Cloyd’s Mountain Reenactment
The New River Rifles, along with Interstate Construction, invite the public to the historic 155th Anniversary of the Battle of Cloyd’s Mountain living history and battle re-enactment on May 4-5. Events will be held starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday, with battles at 2 p.m. daily. This event will include more than 300 living historians portraying various soldiers, civilians and medical corps relative to the events that took place in May 1864. Living history events will take place at the New River Valley Fairgrounds, along with battle scenes taking place on the original battlefield.
Free smoke alarms available
Sound the Alarm (STA) is Red Cross’s National Signature Event to install 100,000 smoke alarms across the country. At these events, Red Cross volunteers, along with fire departments, other partners and new volunteers will canvass high-risk neighborhoods, install free smoke alarms, replace batteries in existing alarms, provide home fire safety tips and help families create escape plans. This year the Red Cross of Roanoke and New River Valleys is partnering with Blacksburg Fire Department and WFXR to install FREE smoke alarms around the Blacksburg community. They will be in the Airport Acres and Allegheny neighborhoods of Blacksburg on May 4, door-to-door canvassing. May is Melanoma Awareness Month, and River Ridge Dermatology will be hosting a free skin cancer screening at the Christiansburg Recreation Center on Friday, May 17, from 1:30-4 p.m. Regular skin checks play a vital role in early detection and treatment. Help save the Pilot Community Center
Pilot School was built in 1921 and served the academic needs of the local community until the 1960s when it became the Pilot Community Center. The building needs some repairs, and we are asking local residents to help determine the future of this historic Appalachian structure and how it will continue to best serve the community.
