Indie Author Day
Radford Public Library’s Radford Reads has seven local authors lined up to show off their works on Indie Author Day. Drop by between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. to meet the authors. Books will be available for purchase and signing. This is your chance to meet your new favorite local author. Their books will be available for purchase and signing at the event.
BraveHeart 5K Run/Walk
BraveHeart 5K Run/Walk will be held on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 11a.m. near Radford University’s Dedmon Center and will help to kick off the annual Highlanders Festival. Proceeds go to the American Heart Association. Runners in kilts are welcome, and encouraged, to celebrate the area’s Scots Irish heritage.Prizes will be awarded for best dressed male/female runner.Cost is $25 and runners can register on-line at www.ItsYourRace.com or on race day beginning at 10 a.m. All participants will receive a t-shirt. There are age and gender divisions. A one-mile fun run will be held immediately following the 5K and is free and open to children and adults of all ages. All participants in the fun run will receive a ribbon. Registration on race day begins at 10 a.m. and will close promptly at 10:45 a,m.
Mount Tabor Ruritan Biscuit Breakfast
Hungry for some biscuits and gravy, or biscuits and apple butter? From 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., the Mount Tabor Ruritan Club will be serving up scratch-made biscuits topped with delicious sausage gravy, or with some of our “world-famous” apple butter. There will also be scrambled eggs, as well as orange juice, milk and coffee. Breakfast will be served in the Fellowship Hall of Slusser’s Chapel, 1543 Mount Tabor Rd, Blacksburg. This is below the Sanctuary, on the lower church parking lot level. This is a fundraiser for our club to help us as we serve our community, therefore, donations will be accepted for the breakfast. Monday, Oct. 14:
Indie Author Workshop
Blacksburg Library; 3 p.m. Workshop will involve instructional videos and information. Over the course of the day the program will highlight the many and varied online and local resources available at little or no cost to individuals seeking to publish. There will be videos that detail parts of the self-publishing experience and equip authors to try their hand at what is quickly becoming the most popular way to publish a book. Whether you’ve written your first rough draft, or polished your final copy, we hope to show you the way to see your books in bookstores and on library shelves. Information and hand-outs for local indie author bookstores and resources will be available.

LEGO and Chess Club
LEGO! Chess! Come to the Radford Public Library to build a LEGO masterpiece, learn to play chess, or challenge your friends to a duel! For ages 7 and up; 6 p.m.
100+ Women Who Care NRV Fall Quarterly Meeting
The ideal volunteer opportunity for women throughout the NRV. Dinner and drink service will be available. Meetings are always one hour or less. Every quarter, each member contributes $100 directly to a charity selected by majority vote. More than $10,000 is donated at every meeting! There are no membership dues or additional commitments of time or money, and members can enter the quarterly drawing to represent a favorite local not-for-profit to the group for consideration of that meeting’s entire donation amount. It’s such an easy way to make a huge difference, and all of the funds remain in the NRV area.

Chorale Fall Concert
Blacksburg Master Chorale and the Blacksburg Children’s Chorale will be performing their Fall concert, “Light, Love and Laughter” in the Covington Center on Radford University’s campus at 7:30 p.m. The concert will feature Morten Lauridsen’s Lux Aeterna, along with other pieces from popular musicals and movies. Indie Author Day
Blacksburg Public Library will be hosting Indie Author Day from 1 – 4 p.m. Speakers will include: Dick Baynton, author of The Handbook of Small Business, Michael Abraham, author of several local fiction and non-fiction books, Ginger Dakin author of children’s book Tippy Toes Hot, and Debra Anderson, local freelance writer and poet. The authors will describe their journeys through self-publishing, and the various paths they took to becoming published authors. Book sales and signings will be available at the end of the program, as well as an opportunity to bring any questions to the authors.

VFW Scholarship Opportunity
The Meadowbrook Library and VFW Post 4920 and Auxiliary are working together to provide the opportunity for students to enter for the VFW Scholarships-Patriots Pen and Voice of Democracy. These are open for students in grades 6-12. These scholarships can be worth up to $30,000 but you have to enter to be eligible. Entry forms and instructions are available at the Meadowbrook Library.
Storytime at the Radford Public Library
Come join us for weekly storytimes at the library! Storytimes are designed to promote pre-reading skills and a love of books. We share books, finger-plays, songs, and other activities that parents and caregivers can repeat at home. No sign-up required, just drop in!

Town of Christiansburg ornament competition
The Town is also searching for its Heritage Ornament to send to Richmond this holiday season. Crafters should enter the Annual Ornament Contest at www.christiansburg.org/ornament for a chance to have their work displayed on the Virginia Holiday Tree at the Executive Mansion. All other entries will have their ornaments displayed on the Christiansburg tree in Town Hall. Enter hand-crafted ornament by Oct. 25 at 4 p.m.

As of Jan. 1, 2019, new health coverage for adults covers more people. If you work in retail, construction, childcare, landscaping, food service or many of the jobs that don’t offer health insurance, you may be able to get low-cost health insurance that includes regular preventive care and treatment for chronic health conditions. Montgomery Museum volunteer opportunities
A number of volunteer opportunities are available at the Montgomery Museum.
Docent: training is provided for individuals to staff the front office, answer calls, make sales, and interpret the history of the museum; events planning: planning and implementation of our major events annually, including Heritage Day, Mountains of Music, h’Arts on Main, Cruisin’ Christiansburg; Working with any of the committees: (Membership, Marketing, Events/Fundraising, Building Expansion, Building and Grounds); research with genealogy projects: working with the genealogy team; gardening: working in the garden with Virginia Master Gardeners. Pre-1940s schools exhibit seeks contributions
The Montgomery Museum of Art and History is celebrating an upcoming new exhibit at the museum on the history of schools in Montgomery County with a series of school photos this month. If you’d like to contribute to the museum’s collection of pre-1940 photos of county schools, please contact the museum curator, Sherry Wyatt, at collections@montgomerymuseum.org.
