Rather than spend their spring break at the beach, 13 University of Georgia students will be in Radford on Tuesday, March 10, to prepare meals and do some spring cleaning at Radford-Fairlawn Daily Bread.
Radford-Fairlawn Daily Bread (RFDB) provides meals at no cost for people in need in Radford and Fairlawn, VA through two programs. One is a dining room that offers free meals Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. until 12:15. The street location is 501 Second Street in Radford. Meals are served in the lower level of the stone building at the corner of Berkley and Second. The meals are for anyone living in Radford or Fairlawn with no questions asked.
The second RFDB program is Meals on Wheels for homebound individuals living in Radford or Fairlawn. Free meals are delivered Monday through Friday between 10 a.m. and noon. The UGA students will arrive at 8 a.m. to assist with meal prep and service. They will remain until 3 p.m. to complete spring cleaning for the entire facility. The usual cadre of volunteers who work Tuesdays will have the day off.
The UGA students will face a busy day with a packed schedule as follows:
8:00-9:00: assist as cook requests with preparation of Meals on Wheels food items; serve food in Meals on Wheels take-out trays; help prepare the dining room meal; wash dishes/clean surfaces/prep for lunch service.
8:00-10:00: wrap silverware in napkins; set up lunch trays; general housekeeping (sweep dining room, mop dining room floor, clean and prepare bathrooms), clean tables and chairs.
9:30-10:30: assist with donated food delivery; sort food for use; follow food storage procedures based on guidance from staff.
10:00-noon: deliver meals to 30 homebound neighbors, split into two routes of approximately 15 stops for each; driving instructions will be provided.
10:45-noon: fill trays with food in the kitchen; rinse dirty trays/stack for bleaching, prepare silverware and cups for washing; carry trays to guest in the dining room; bus tables to remove dirty trays and drink glasses, wipe and sanitize tables between guests; spot sweep to clear dropped food/reduce slip risk.
12:00-12:45: break for lunch
1:00-3:00: spring clean-up in the dining room: wipe down tables and chairs with antibacterial cleaner; move Brian’s Cart and clean floor and wall/under and behind; wipe cart with stainless steel cleaner/clean inside of cart with vinegar and water; clean bus cart; wash baseboards; wash window sills; wash windows (weather permitting); sweep and mop floor; clean trash can inside and out; deep clean bathroom: wash basins, clean toilet, wash walls, clean mirror, scrub floor.; in the pantry: sort and organize items; move bins/ sweep and mop floor; clean crates; in the janitor’s closet: sort and organize supplies; clean mop sink; wipe walls; sweep and mop floor; kitchen: bleach trays/run through dishwasher; clean behind and under stove; move and clean behind microwave cart; clean shelves; wipe down exterior of all equipment; clean inside of upright freezer and fridge with vinegar and water; clean cooler floor; sweep and mop kitchen floor.
