Outdoor theatre series to feature Shakespeare at Nesselrod

One of William Shakespeare’s most beloved comedies will be the second production offered as part of the Summer Outdoor Theater Series in the historic Sunken Garden Amphitheater at Radford’s Nesselrod Bed & Breakfast in Farilawn.

The play, “Twelfth Night,” will have a limited three-day run Sept. 1-3 during Labor Day Weekend.

“Twelfth Night,” a story of mistaken identity and unrequited love, features Viola, a young woman shipwrecked on the shores of a foreign land. As the plot unfolds, audiences will be treated to characters in disguise, love at first sight and swordplay by a troupe of professional actors from Richmond.

Radford University assistant professor Molly Hood, who leads the group, is familiar to theatergoers for her work as an actress and director at the university and as director of the Mary Drapers Ingles play—“Walk to Freedom”—that opened Nesselrod’s outdoor series in late June. Hood also has appeared at the Richmond Shakespeare Festival in various roles, including the lead in a groundbreaking production of “Hamlet”.

Dinner tickets, which must be purchased in advance, are $50 and provide patrons with a gourmet dinner, a special beer and wine tasting and reserved seating at the play. The tasting begins at 5 p.m. followed by dinner at 6 p.m. Reserved tables are available for groups of eight.

Mark Gordon, who owns Nesselrod, says he’s taking his cue from Shakespeare to come up with the dinner menu.

“Throughout his writings we see the role food and drink plays, and I’m just delighted to treat our patrons to the tastes of Shakespeare’s time,” he said.

General admission tickets to the play are $15 and $10 for students with I.D. In addition, snacks and drinks will be available for purchase at the performance venue, with gates opening at 6 p.m.

The production begins at 7 p.m. General admission playgoers will need to bring a chair or blanket to the performance venue.
