Virginia Tech swimmer Carmen Weiler Sastre punched her ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympics Tuesday during the 2024 Spanish Swimming Championships, which ran Tuesday through Saturday in Palma de Mallorca, Spain.
In the 100-meter backstroke prelims, Weiler Sastre swam a 59.65. She stopped the clock in a personal-best time and lowered her own national record by .11, which she set at last year’s national championships.
Weiler Sastre surpassed the World Aquatics Olympic Qualification Time of 59.99 by .34. She will join Mario Molla Yanes on the Spanish Olympic team who qualified for the 100 butterfly earlier this year. In addition to the two Spaniards, Ian Ho, a Tech alumnus, will compete for Hong Kong in the 50 free.
