Virginia Tech wrestlers David McFadden and Hunter Bolen have been named First-Team All-Americans, the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) announced Wednesday.
With the honor, McFadden becomes the program’s first four-time All-American. He earned the distinction by finishing sixth, fifth, and fifth at the 2016, 2018 and 2019 NCAA Championships, respectively. The redshirt senior was slotted as the 7-seed at the 2020 NCAA Championships.
McFadden went 21-5 in his final season in maroon and orange. He claimed his 100th career victory on January 11 versus West Virginia at Cassell Coliseum, joining just 12 other Hokies in the 100-win club.
Bolen earned his first All-American honor. The redshirt sophomore had a breakout campaign, finishing the season as the No.–1 ranked 184-pound wrestler as determined by InterMat. A graduate of Christiansburg High School, Bolen went 24-2 this season, won his first ACC title and was seeded second at the 2020 NCAA Championships.
The NWCA ordinarily recognizes All-Americans based on their performance at the NCAA Championships. Because of the cancellation of the 2020 championships, this year’s All-American class was selected on the basis of the wrestlers’ body of work through the conference championships.
