The Virginia Tech Football team took a great opportunity this past Saturday to give back to the local community by participating in The Big Event across the New River Valley.
The Big Event at Virginia Tech is a student-run day of service that has grown into the second-largest event of its kind in the nation. Every spring, thousands of students, faculty, and staff come together to complete nearly 1,200 community service projects throughout Blacksburg, Christiansburg and the New River Valley, with the purpose of saying ‘Thank You’.

Head coach Brent Pry spoke during the opening ceremony at the Drillfield, highlighting the importance of giving back to the community.
“The fact that you’re giving back to the community that fills the stadium, that supports you,” Pry stated during a team meeting Saturday morning. “It’s really a great event for us.”
The day of service officially began with the firing of Tech’s iconic Skipper.
Following the opening ceremony, players and staff gathered their tools to aid the Blacksburg community. Organized into 10 different groups based on positions, players engaged in diverse acts of service, including mulching and weeding, planting fruit trees, painting and repairing sheds, cleaning at a local church and refurbishing furniture for residents.
“That’s what it’s called being a Hokie,” defensive lineman Elijah Klock reflected while conducting yard work. “Blue collar.”
The Hokies’ hard-working blue-collar mentality will continue with the upcoming spring game, presented by PMSI, set for Saturday, April 13, at 3 p.m. ET. In collaboration with Triumph NIL and The Hokie Way, fans are encouraged to participate in the NIL initiative of their choosing.
