George Warren Swift, age 89, of Blacksburg, died Monday, May 28, 2018 at Lewis Gale Hospital-Montgomery. He was born in Washington, D.C. on March 20, 1929. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Bailey Swift, his parents, James H. and Virginia H. Turner, his sister-in-law, Wilma Turner, a niece, Anne Turner.
He was a veteran of the United States Army. George earned his B.S., M.S. and PhD in Engineering at Virginia Tech where he taught engineering, science, and mechanics for over 30 years.
He was a longtime member of Blacksburg Baptist Church. His love of God guided his life everyday. He was an avid kayaker and runner, and loved to spend time at his beloved farm “Sugartree”. He enthusiastically studied the sciences until his last day. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, George and Susan Swift, daughter and son-in-law, Susan and John Patton, grandchildren, Sarah Supples and husband, Michael, Hannah Patton and husband, Kevin, Austin, Ethan and Macy Swift, brother and sister-in-law, James H. and Doris Turner, nephew, Jay Turner and wife, Kathi.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Monday, June 4, 2018. in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Tommy McDearis officiating. Interment will follow in the Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Christiansburg.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Blacksburg Baptist Church 550 N. Main Street, Blacksburg, Va. 24060. The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. Monday prior to the service at the McCoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Dr. SW, Blacksburg.
