On an east-facing slope, among wild ginger and a spray of native chickweed spikes of delphinium, or larkspur, bloom now in Wildwood Park. Often blue, but white and even pink, delphiniums prefer the park’s fertile, humus rich, well-drained soils and sun-dappled shade.

Young fern fronds called “croziers” of “fiddleheads” emerge from Wildwood Park leaf litter. Coiled into compact curls, they unfurl as the weather warms.
