Highs fall to Charleston Southern in series finale

The Radford softball team dropped the final game of its Big South Conference series against Charleston Southern on Sunday, falling by an 8-1 decision.

Charleston Southern’s Jade Gandara and Cheyenne Gandara combined for six of the team’s eight RBIs, with the former going 3 for 4 with four RBIs.

The Buccaneers (20-27, 5-7) took a 3-0 lead in the first inning, taking advantage of an error with an RBI single by Jade Gandara. Cheyenne Gandara followed with a two-run homer, her seventh of the season. CSU made it 4-0 in the fifth on back-to-back doubles by Stevi Johnson and Jade Gandara.

Radford (18-17, 4-5) broke up Cheyenne Gandara’s shutout in bottom of the inning as Wratchford hit a one-out double over the left-fielder, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a throwing error.

However, the Buccaneers came back with two in the top of the sixth on a two-run single by Jade Gandara and capped the scoring with two more in the seventh.

Kayla Huffman took the loss for the Highlanders, allowing four runs – three earned – on seven hits in five innings. She struck out five and walked one. Cheyenne Gandara struck out four with one walk in the compete-game win.

Radford continues its home stand this afternoon with a non-conference doubleheader against Western Carolina, with the first game set for 3 p.m.
