Chris Hertel has resigned as Radford University’s head volleyball coach due to personal reasons effective immediately.
Michelle Johnson will serve as interim head coach while Radford Athletics begins a national search for the next leader of the program. Details about his departure have not been released.
Hertel took over the program just a year ago after serving as an assistant at New Mexico State. Previously, he had served as an assistant at Radford, who are 3-8 under his tenure this season.
H2okies weekly honors
Carles Coll Marti and Rocky Ramsland were tabbed ACC Swimmer and Diver of the week for their performances in the season-opener against George Washington.
Coll Marti had an outstanding dual-meet, taking home four first-place finishes. He kicked the day off with a first-place finish in the 100-meter breaststroke, swimming a 59.30. He then competed in the 200 IM, taking first with a 1:46.28.
On top of his individual events, Coll Marti competed in the 200-medley relay, helping the Hokies to a win with their time of 1:26.36. He also swam in the 400 freestyle relay to close out the meet, placing first with a 2:57.71.
Ramsland also had stellar performances on the boards in the season opener, earning NCAA Zone Cuts in both his events. He took first place on 1-meter with a score of 325.58, and third place on 3-meter with a score of 341.25.
ACC recognizes Love
Virginia Tech kicker John Love has been named the ACC Specialist of the Week for his efforts Friday night against Miami.
Love (5-11, 180) connected on a career-long 57-yard field goal late in the first half. It was the third longest kick in school history.
The redshirt sophomore later hit a 52-yard kick in the third quarter, becoming the first Virginia Tech kicker to make two or more field goals from 51 yards or longer during the same game since Dave Strock against Southern Miss in 1972.
The Spartanburg, South Carolina native also connected on all four of his extra point attempts against the Hurricanes. Love has now made eight of his nine field goals on the season.
Hokie high school XC
The Auburn High School girls’ cross country took third in the 5,000 meters team score at the Virginia Tech Burnt Orange meet. Alyson Funk finished second. The Auburn boys’ placed fifth and Radford sixth. Individually, Blake Brown finished third.
In the Maroon Division, Christiansburg finished fourth in the girls’ division with Floyd fifth. Individually, Christiansburg’s Mariah Reed finished in ninth place. Eastern Montgomery was eight in the men’s team race and Blacksburg 10th.
Quad middle school meet
Babo Himes from Blacksburg Middle School took the top spot in the boy’s 2-mile finals held Monday at Blacksburg High School. Charles Phillips from Christiansburg Middle School was third and Eli Scott of BMS third.
Blacksburg Middle would take the team title with CMS second.
Christiansburg Middle took the top individual spots in the girls’ 2-mile run with Madeline Sala
claimed first and Abbey Nicholson second. The CMS girls took the team win with Pulaski Middle second.
