Tech, South Carolina Set for Action
Virginia Tech will hit the road to face South Carolina in the third annual ACC/SEC Challenge as announced by ESPN, Thursday afternoon. The 34th all-time meeting between the two programs will take place Tuesday, Dec. 2 at Colonial Life Arena in Columbia, S.C. Tip times and coverage details, including platform designations and commentator information, will be announced in the fall.
December’s matchup will be the third straight season Tech and South Carolina are set to compete on the hardwood. The Hokies have dropped three in a row in the series, which the Gamecocks lead 20-13. Tech’s last visit to Columbia, S.C., to face South Carolina was on Jan. 16, 1991.
South Carolina, led by Lamont Paris, finished the 2024-25 season at 12-20 overall and 2-16 in SEC play. One of the Gamecocks’ wins came in the Fort Myers Tip-Off on Nov. 27 against Virginia Tech, 70-60.
Hokies, Providence in Tip-Off
For the first time in over two decades, Virginia Tech will face off against Providence in an early-season matchup as part of the 2025 Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Series on Nov. 8 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.
This game will mark the 10th all-time meeting between the Hokies and the Friars, rekindling a rivalry that hasn’t appeared on the court since Feb. 4, 2004, when Tech secured a decisive 12-point victory. The Hokies currently hold a narrow 5-4 edge in the all-time series.
“We’re honored and excited to be part of the 2025 Basketball Hall of Fame Tip Off at Mohegan Sun,” said Virginia Tech head coach Mike Young. “It’s a first-class event that showcases some intriguing matchups, and we’re looking forward to a great one with Providence. I have fond memories from the last time we were up there in 2021, and I look forward to taking our team back in November.”
Those fond memories trace back to Tech’s 81-73 overtime upset of No. 3 Villanova the last time the Hokies ventured to Mohegan Sun to start the 2020-21 season.
Women ACC/SEC
The Atlantic Coast Conference in conjunction with ESPN and the Southeastern Conference announced the matchups for the 2025 ACC/SEC Men’s and Women’s Basketball Challenges Thursday afternoon.
Megan Duffy and her Hokies will play host to the Florida Gators on Thursday, Dec. 4 with tip time and television designation to be announced later.
Virginia Tech and Florida have met four times before in women’s basketball with the Gators holding a 3-1 advantage in the series. The teams last played in December of 2014 in Gainesville, a contest that the Gators won 73-44. In the only meeting at Cassell, the Hokies won a 71-59 game in November of 2013.
Last season the Hokies went to Georgia and secured a 70-61 victory, the program’s first in the Challenge. Tech was the only ACC team to win a road game in the 2024 edition of the Challenge that the SEC ultimately won.
