Auburn High grad named All-ODAC
The Emory & Henry College Softball Team has seen six of its players named to the All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference Teams, announced Tuesday. It marks the second-straight year that the Wasps have posted program-bests for all-conference honorees.
Junior outfielder Erin Anderson was selected to the All-ODAC First Team while senior first baseman Caley Hodge and junior catcher Amanda Whitlow (Riner) earned second-team recognition. Senior shortstop Leah Elswick, junior outfielder Madison McClanahan and sophomore second baseman Lyndsay Boyd joined the group with spots on the third team.
Whitlow makes it back-to-back seasons as an all-league performer, batting .276 with a .354 on-base percentage. She stole eight bases and drove in five runs while drawing six walks on the year. Regarded as a defensive threat behind the plate, Whitlow also threw out 10 runners on the base paths and allowed just 15 steals on the season.
Hokie lacrosse ranked 12th
Following the ACC Tournament in Durham, North Carolina, the Virginia Tech lacrosse team stayed in the 12th position in the Inside Lacrosse Poll on Monday. It is the third consecutive week that the Hokies have held that ranking.
I n a season filled with firsts, the ACC Tournament provided a few more for the Hokies’ program. It marked the highest seed that the program had ever earned, and Thursday night’s victory was Tech’s first in the competition since joining the league in 2005.
Tech placed two players on the All-Tournament Team; Paige Petty and Meagh Graham. Petty, a First Team All-ACC selection, led the Hokies in scoring over the weekend, tallying four goals and one assist in Tech’s 13-12 victory over Duke. She also tallied a goal in the semifinal round versus eventual champion North Carolina.
Fritz, Matheny weekly Big South honorees
For the first time during the 2018 season, the Big South’s Relief Pitcher and Freshman of the Week reside in the New River Valley. Radford University’s Cameron Fritz was named relief pitcher of the week and Garrett Matheny collected freshman of the week honors, the league announced Monday afternoon.
In seven relief outings, Fritz owns a 2.33 ERA with a 3-0 record. He has yielded only two walks in 19.1 innings, holding opposing hitters to a .152 average.
Matheny led the Highlanders in hitting on the week, going 6 for 15 at the plate with two doubles and three RBIs. In the Presbyterian series, Matheny went 5 for 12 at the dish with all three RBIs. Collecting two multi-hit games in the series, Matheny has seven multi-hit games, while picking up two multi-RBI performances.
Douglas named freshman of the week
Talia Douglas has been named Big South Freshman of the Week, the conference announced on Monday afternoon. It’s the second time this season the Radford University freshman has won the weekly honor.
Defensively, she was stellar in the hot corner recording 19 assists for the week, including a season-high eight on Friday night in the opener against Presbyterian. The eight assists were the most of any individual in a game this season.
The Melbourne, Fla., native’s offense was great as well on Friday night as she had one home run; her fifth of the season, and two RBIs. The two-run homer was enough to give Radford all the offense it needed in the 2-1 victory. Friday night was one of two multi-RBI games the freshman had. Earlier in the week, she had a 2-for-4 performance with two RBIs against Western Carolina.
Concord to host girls basketball camp
The Concord University women’s basketball team has announced dates for three summer camps
The program will host its annual high school team shootout June 16. The cost per team will be $175 and $300 for those wanting to bring a junior varsity squad. Each team will be guaranteed a minimum of three games.
On June 2, Concord will host an elite camp at the Carter Center. Elite campers will train in the same environment that the Mountain Lion basketball players participate in on a daily basis. Games will be played to allow the campers to showcase their talent for the Concord coaching staff. The camp will run from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with the cost being $50.
On June 25-28, the women’s basketball program will hold a kids’ day camp for girls entering third grade up to rising eighth graders. The camp will run from 4-8 p.m. each day. This camp is designed to give experience of fundamentals and basketball training by our college coaching staff. Topics such as shooting, passing, dribbling, and defense will be included throughout the day. Registration for this camp will be $75 before May 25 and $100 after the early deadline.

Hokies add Bucknell transfer
Head coach Tony Robie announced Monday the addition of Tom Sleigh, a 197-pound graduate transfer from Bucknell, to the Virginia Tech wrestling program.
Sleigh was a three-time NCAA qualifier and three-time EIWA place winner who racked up 89 wins in three seasons with the Bison. The DuBois, Pa., native will have one year of eligibility remaining and is eligible to compete for the upcoming 2018-19 season.
As a true freshman, Sleigh went 30-18 at 184 pounds and earned an automatic berth to nationals with a fifth-place finish at the EIWA Championships. After going to 2-2 at NCAAs as a sophomore, Sleigh bumped up to 197 pounds as a junior in 2016-17 where he earned a second-place finish at EIWAs and qualified for the national tournament for the third time.
Sleigh was able to retain his final year of eligibility after suffering an injury in the first dual of the 2017-18 season. The two-time EIWA All-Academic selection received his undergraduate degree in environmental studies.
RU adds Carico to its list of throwers
Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Brent Chumbley has announced the addition of thrower Lexy Carico to the Radford Track & Field team.
Working with Coach Kali Slaydon at Patrick County High School, Carico put together a long list of achievements in her four years as a Cougar. Serving as a team captain since her freshman year, many people saw her potential from the start.
Specializing mainly in the discus throw, Carico placed fourth in Virginia and 30th in the nation in the event during the 2016 season before getting the results from her hard work and winning the state championship in 2017. She finished 13th in the nation that year.
The PCHS record books heavily feature her name – she owns the discus record with a throw of 42.43 meters (139’2.5″) and the indoor shot put record at 10.83 meters (35’6.5″).
