ACC Performer of the Week
Lisa Gunnarsson of Virginia Tech’s track and field team has been named ACC Women’s Field Performer of the Week, as announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon.
The freshman broke the outdoor school record in the pole vault at the Texas Relays last weekend, vaulting a height of 4.60 meters (15 feet, 1 inch) to place second. The honor marks her second ACC Performer of the Week selection this year, as she earned the nod on Jan. 30 during the indoor season.
Gunnarsson’s mark reset the Mike A. Myers Stadium’s collegiate athlete record on the women’s side and tied the seventh-best jump in collegiate history. The mark also is No. 1 in the country.
Gunnarsson, a native of Stockholm, Sweden, broke the national junior record for Sweden, too. Tech’s record for the outdoor season was previously held by Martina Schultze set in 2013.
Hokies fall a spot
Following two weeks of action during the outdoor season, the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) released its Top 25 rankings on Monday afternoon, with the Virginia Tech men coming in at No. 13 and the women at No. 18.
The men fell one spot while the women moved up two from the previous poll, released on March 20 for the preseason. Tech owns the highest-rated team on both sides out of the ACC.
Tech is the one of only two schools ( HYPERLINK “http://www.seminoles.com/” Florida State) from the HYPERLINK “http://www.theacc.com/” ACC to have both of its units ranked inside the Top 25. The men are one of three schools from the conference, with Virginia at No. 23 and Florida State at No. 25, and the women are one of two teams ranked, with Florida State at No. 19.
