Big South golfer of week
After winning two Big South Golfer of the Week awards in the spring of 2017, Myles Creighton begins the spring of 2018 bringing home the award once again, the conference office announced on Friday.
Creighton finished the Wexford Intercollegiate one-under with an aggregate score of 215, which locked him into eighth place. He began the first round with a four-under 68 with only four birdies but collected pars for the rest of the holes in round one.
He shot par in round two but was three-over in the final round. However, he was still able to finish in eighth place and ahead of all the other Big South players in the competition. It’s the Digby, Nova Scotia, Canada native’s 12th top-10 finish of his career.
Robinson All-ACC
Virginia Tech guard Justin Robinson has been named to the All-ACC second team, as announced by the league on Sunday.
Robinson, a junior from Manassas, was named to the team in voting by a panel of coaches, media and radio broadcasters. This is Robinson’s first time being honored by the league. Robinson was joined on the second team by Marcquise Reed of Clemson, Tyus Battle of Syracuse, Devon Hall of Virginia and Wendell Carter Jr., of Duke.
Marvin Bagley III was named ACC Player of the Year and the league’s Freshman of the Year. He is joined on the first team by Jerome Robinson of Boston College, Luke Maye and Joel Berry II of North Carolina and Kyle Guy of Virginia.
Tony Bennett of Virginia was named the league’s Coach of the Year and Maye was named Most Improved Player. Isaiah Wilkins of Virginia was named Defensive Player of the Year and the Cavaliers’ De’Andre Hunter was named Sixth Man of the Year.
Swim meet to close CAC
The Christiansburg Aquatics Center will be hosting the Age Group Champs swim meet beginning Thursday. The competition pool will be open 7 a.m.-12 p.m. The leisure and therapy pools will be open 5:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. All pools will be closed Friday-Sunday. The aquatics center will reopen Monday, March 12 at 5:30 a.m.
Concord women fifth
The Concord University women’s track and field team recorded a fifth-place showing at the Golden Eagle Invite hosted by the University of Charleston Saturday afternoon. CU notched 66 points in the meet. Junior Bailey Knowles from Christiansburg came away with a victory in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as she crossed the line in 12:38. Knowles was among four Concord runners in the top nine in the 800-meter run.
