Bruins state all-star game
Henry Carman, Defender, Senior-1 goal, 2 assists, 1st Team All-District, 2nd Team All-Region, selected to play in the VA Soccer Coaches Association All-Star Soccer Showcase on July 12-13, will play at Hampden-Sydney College.
Sam Dickinson, Midfielder, Senior–missed first 6 matches due to injury, second team All-District and second team All-Region, 5 goals and 1 assist, will play at D-III power Christopher Newport University, selected to play in the State high school soccer all-star show she game July 12-13; was first team All-State in 2018.
Concord basketball schedule
Concord University men’s basketball head coach Todd May released the program’s 2019-20 schedule Monday.
The slate is made up of six non-conference games and 22 Mountain East Conference contests. All weeknight conference games are at 7:30 p.m. while the Saturday tilts around the league are at 4:00 p.m.
CU takes on regional power Indiana (Pa.) November 8 to the start the season followed by a neutral-court clash with Pitt-Johnstown November 9.
The Mountain Lions continue their non-conference schedule against Mercer County rival Bluefield State November 12.
Floyd, Keene at ACC Kickoff
The Atlantic Coast Conference announced Tuesday that Virginia Tech football student-athletes S Reggie Floyd and TE Dalton Keene will join head coach Justin Fuente at the 2019 ACC Football Kickoff on July 18 at the Westin Charlotte.
The Hokies embark on their fourth season under Fuente who has compiled a 25-15 record in Blacksburg, the most wins by any Tech football coach in his first three campaigns.
Floyd (6-0, 222) – The Manassas, Virginia product ranked second on Tech’s defense with 88 total tackles and tied for second with 9.5 TFL as a junior in 2018. A second-team All-ACC preseason selection by Phil Steele, he has also been named a fourth-team preseason All-ACC selection by Athlon Sports.
Keene (6-4, 246) – The Littleton, Colorado native earned honorable mention All-ACC accolades in 2018 after registering 19 catches for 302 receiving yards (15.9 avg.) with three touchdowns. He posted 82 receiving yards, including a 67-yard touchdown in a victory at Duke (9/29/18) and also caught a one-yard, game-winning touchdown at North Carolina (10/13/18).
Three all-academic ACC
Virginia Tech players Kerry Carpenter, Chris Gerard and Ryan Okuda were among the 61 ACC student-athletes named to the 2019 All-ACC Academic Baseball Team as announced today by the league office.
It’s the third straight year Tech has had at least three players chosen to the squad and it marks the 14th straight postseason the Hokies have had at least two members.
Okuda, a rising junior from Gibsonia, Pennsylvania, makes the squad for the first time and highlights the trio named to the All-ACC Academic Baseball Team. Back in March, the mechanical engineering student won the 2019 Virginia Tech Skelton Award for Academic Excellence in Athletics at the Athletics Director Honors Celebration.
JMU hall of fame
Virginia Tech women’s golf head coach Carol Robertson will be inducted into the James Madison University Athletics Hall of Fame in September, the school has announced. Robertson will become the first women’s golfer to be inducted into the hall of fame.
Robertson was the Colonial Athletics Association’s medalist and Player of the Year in 2003 and repeated as Player of the Year in 2004. Robertson advanced to twice represent JMU in NCAA Regional competition and was later named to the CAA Silver Anniversary Team, recognizing the best 25 players in the conference’s first 25 seasons.
Wilson tabs Reichard
Virginia Tech head volleyball coach Jill Wilson announced the addition of Lauren Reichard to the coaching staff on Tuesday as a volunteer assistant coach.
Reichard is a Georgia Southern graduate, earning a bachelor’s degree in business administration this past May. She was a four-year letter winner on the volleyball team, playing middle blocker.
McGuire adds assistant coach
Radford University women’s basketball head coach Mike McGuire announced the addition of Chrystal Starling to the coaching staff and the promotion of Carlie Clary to Director of Operations on Monday.
Prior to joining McGuire’s staff, Starling served as an assistant girls’ varsity coach for The Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, New York since 2017. She helped guide the Panthers to a 17-6 record and the school’s first state championship in the 2018-19 season.
The Syracuse, New York native was the head coach at Bradshaw Christian Middle School in 2014 and was also an assistant at Bradshaw Christian High School from 2014-16.
Starling is familiar with the New River Valley after playing at Virginia Tech from 1998-2003.
The other addition to the staff is a familiar face in Clary, who served as the Assistant Director of Basketball Operations for Radford last season. Clary has been with McGuire since 2017 where she put in time as the head manager for the 2017-18 season. The Dublin native moved up the ranks during the 2018-19 season as the assistant director of operations.
Her experience in coaching ranges from Assistant Women’s Varsity Coach at Auburn High School from 2014-2016, Assistant Women’s AAU Basketball Coach at Pulaski County High School in 2014 and more.
Local players in all-star game
The Valley Summer Baseball League held its all-star game on Sunday with several local connections. The wooden-bat amateur league contest included Jonah Seagars from Virginia Tech and first baseman Jimmy Goldsmith.
