Hollandsworth fifth
The final round of the 2019 NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championship was completed on Tuesday morning and Amanda Hollandsworth finishes in fifth place individually. The 54-hole event was played at the par 73, 6,397-yard Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
Hollandsworth, a graduate student from Floyd, Virginia, is the first Hokie to qualify for the NCAA Championship round. She finished with an even-par 219 and was eight strokes behind Maria Fassi of host Arkansas, who carded a 5-under 68 on Monday to claim the individual national title.
Hollandsworth was the top finisher among the 21 Atlantic Coast Conference golfers competing in the championship round. She will now focus on the 2019 U.S. Women’s Open Championship, to be played at the Country Club of Charleston in Charleston, South Carolina May 31 – June 2.
Owens All-ACC
The Atlantic Coast Conference announced its 2019 baseball postseason honors today and among those recognized is Virginia Tech redshirt-senior Jack Owens, who made the All-ACC Second Team as a second baseman. This is the second time in his career he’s been selected to the ACC postseason team, garnering a third team choice in 2017.
Owens becomes Tech’s first two-time All-ACC honoree since Mark Zagunis, who was a two-time All-ACC catcher (2012, 2014). Owens, Zagunis and Steve Domecus (2009, OF; 2010, C) are the only three Hokies to be named to the All-ACC postseason team twice.
At the plate, Owens led the team in batting, with a .323 average, while pounding out 53 hits (third on the team), including nine doubles and two home runs. He ended the year with 33 runs scored (tied for third), knocked in 12 more and added five stolen bases to his totals.
Ho All-District 3
Virginia Tech graduate student and men’s swimmer Ian Ho has been selected to the 2018-10 Google Cloud Academic All-District 3 Men’s At-Large team as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Ho is one of 10 student-athletes on the District 3 team. A Magna Cum Laude graduate of Virginia Tech with a degree in mechanical engineering, Ho is currently pursuing his master’s in the same program. In addition, Ho is a three-time All-ACC Academic Team selection, a CSCAA Academic All-America and earned the ACC Postgrad Scholarship.
The Blacksburg native wrapped up a swim career that left his name etched in the Virginia Tech record books. He holds the program record in the 50 free and as a member of the 200 free relay team. Ho is a three-time NCAA qualifier and an Olympic Trials qualifier. Most recently, Ho earned 2019 Gold Medal and set a Hong Kong national record in the 50 at the Hong Kong Open.
Walz on national team
Virginia Tech volunteer assistant coach Ty Walz placed second at the 2019 World Team Trials in Raleigh, N.C., over the weekend to retain his spot at 97 kg on the United States’ national team.
Walz is the only wrestler to ever represent the Hokies on the senior men’s freestyle national team. Joining him at 97 kilos is NCAA champion Kyven Gadson and 2016 Olympic gold medalist Kyle Snyder.
The Cleveland native went 2-0 in the challenge tournament where he defeated California RTC’s Daniel Chaid, 12-8, and New York Athletic Club’s Kevin Beazley, 11-4, to advance to the best of three finals against Gadson. Gadson would narrowly claim two bouts by the scores of 3-2 and 3-0 to move on to Final X in Lincoln, Neb., next month for a spot on the World Team.
Outstanding spring at RU
Following a fantastic fall semester, Radford student-athletes had a historic spring semester with record-breaking academic performances across the board.
A total of 15 out of 16 programs earned a 3.0 grade point average or better, led by the women’s cross country team which boasted an outstanding 3.80 GPA. In fact, women’s cross country was revealed to have the highest grade point average of any team in the nation back in February.
In total, 183 or 74% of all Highlanders earned GPA’s over 3.0 or better with 133 (54%) surpassing a 3.40 GPA and 40 (16%) earning a perfect 4.0 GPA. Women’s Soccer had the most players with 4.0 GPA’s with seven, following closely by Lacrosse (six) and Volleyball (five).
