Mundy player of week
After an offensive explosion in Asheville this weekend, junior designated hitter J.D. Mundy has been named Big South Player of the Week for the first time in his career, the conference office announced Monday afternoon.
Mundy led the Highlanders’ offense from the clean-up spot in the lineup, going 8-for-11 (.727) with three home runs, eight runs batted in, four runs scored and two walks.
The effort boosted his season batting average from .265 to .294 and extended his current hitting streak to nine games. In 49 games started, the Roanoke native now has 34 runs scored, 12 home runs, 45 RBI and a .403 on-base percentage.
Cow Classic golf tourney
The 2019 event will be held Monday, May 20 at the Blacksburg Country Club in Blacksburg. Since 2002, the event has raised $162,000 for scholarships for Department of Dairy Science at Virginia Tech. An additional $30,000 has been provided for 4-H programing. The tournament will be a four-person captain’s choice.
Participant prices include: $175 for individual golfers, $600 for team sponsor (18-hole package) and $500 team sponsor (9-hole package).

Hokies land two more recruits
Virginia Tech wrestling head coach Tony Robie announced Wednesday that Massachusetts standout Jack Darling and Christiansburg heavyweight Andy Smith have officially been added to Virginia Tech’s 2019 recruiting class.
Darling finished his career at Masconomet High School with a record of 212-14. He won two all-state championships, finished No. 1 in the state at 132 pounds and was a three-time NHSCA All-American with two third place finishes.
Smith won 2019 Virginia 3A state championship at 220 pounds a year after placing second at the state tournament. He finished the season ranked No. 1 in at 220 and No. 5 in the VAWA pound-for-pound rankings.
Tech is bringing in a consensus top five recruiting class next season. Intermat and FloWrestling ranked the Hokies’ 2019 haul fifth in the country and The Open Mat slotted them at No. 4. The rankings by all three websites were the highest of any team in the ACC.
Motor Mile bike night
Children between the ages of 5-12 are being invited to race on the track at Motor Mile Speedway in Radford this season. Bicycles will be provided and will begin prior to the start of pre-race ceremonies, taking place on the front straight-away.
Personal bicycles will not be allowed.
The races will be held June 1, July 6 and August 3. The winner will have an opportunity to have his/her pictured taking in victory lane. Races are just for fun, and no prizes will be awarded. Each participant must pre-register at the track prior to the bicycle race.
ACC Network to carry Hokies
The Atlantic Coast Conference announced that Virginia Tech’s football season opener at Boston College will kick off at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 31 with the game airing as part of the ACC Network’s initial slate of televised contests. The Hokies will open their schedule with an ACC road contest for a second consecutive year after registering a 24-3 win at Florida State last season. The Hokies last opened the year against Boston College in 1995.
In addition, the ACC also confirmed that Tech’s contest vs. Furman on Saturday, Sept. 14 will also air on ACC Network. Kickoff is slated for noon ET at Lane Stadium.
The ACC is anticipated to announce the kickoff time and television information on Thursday for Tech’s 2019 home opener vs. Old Dominion on Saturday, Sept. 7.
Highs add tennis signee
After a stellar postseason run, the Radford University men’s tennis program is excited about the addition of Dimosthenis Taramonlis, which was announced on Wednesday afternoon by head coach Rob Bareford.
Known by many as Demi, Taramonlis began playing at the age of five and found a love for tennis from of his father. The Veria, Greece native began playing competitively at the age of seven. Through steady competition and training, Taramonlis competed with the Greek national team at the 2017 European Championships. That was the first goal he set for himself at an early age.
Along with the completion of his goal, Taramonlis was a singles finalist at the ITF U18 singles (Grade 5) and was a three-time singles quarterfinalist in the same tournament. Prior to that he was a two-time Tennis Europe U16 singles champion in 2016 and 2017.
The 6-1, 158-pound player was a national tournament first place singles player in 2017 and a two-time National Masters Singles Champion. He was also a national singles champion 21 times, a national doubles champion 33 times and was a 3rd District singles champion 42 times.
